Ouroboros 1.1.4 Released!

That's right, it's complete and it's publicly available! Read the writeup here if you haven't already, or just download here:

Not a lot more to say, I just hope people enjoy it. I hope the next TLS update will be out in about a week!

EDIT: There is a new version of the game uploaded - notably, this version includes a prologue that didn't exist in any previous version of the game. The people who were kind enough to give this game a try were consistent in saying that the game didn't give away its true nature fast enough. Accordingly, I have changed the synopsis and added the prologue, which I hope will interest the people who would actually like this game.

EDIT II: Links updated to version 1.1.7.

EDIT III: Ouroboros 2.0 can now be found here. It contains full art for all sex scenes and about twice the content of the first version!

  1. Enjoying it so far but absolutely stumped on what i should do to get past the orange flame. I ca already bring 2 party members and have beaten all the bosses apart from the memories on the blocked off part of the beach.

I do not know what I'm doing with this, I just selected the proper option and built the deployment. I hope you can take the file and it will work properly? Please let me know how the game plays on Android, there's been zero testing on the platform.

    2. From what little I could play on Android, the only issue that prevented the game from being playable on a touchscreen is trying to implement a jump. At least through the program I utilised, NekoRPG. Not sure if that is across the board for Android solutions or just that one in particular.

    1. Is the game lagging on your computer? Sorry about that, MV does not seem to perform very well compared to previous engines. I've done a number of things to try to streamline combat, and I'd implement more if I had more ideas.

      Delete
    2. I'm not lagging, it's just that the base combat animations take way to long to happen, it'd be nice to turn off animations. The worst is that one enemy attack animation, dire(desperate strike?) the one that shows like 4 claw marks. That's like 3-5 seconds, which is like enough time for me to read a sentence or two of my novel while playing this game. Anyways, no a days everyone has the attention span of a gold fish, so waiting for the animations is uhhhhh ??? Sorry for the complaints, but the base animations for MV are so freaking long.

    3. Try using Cheat Engine speedhack to speed up combat. It can eat a lot of CPU, but it's always worked great for me to speed up slow RPG maker games or scenes.

    1. I'm not sure how much of the game you've uncovered. The answer to the Teira question is "The same way as everyone else" - if that doesn't make sense, right now you don't need to concern yourself with the orange flame or any other characters.

    2. I've done about all I can think of. I have a similar issue to the guy above. I've done just about everything, got all the items, done multiple cycles, beat all the bosses. i just can't get past the orange flame. and I've completed, or mostly I would assume, Amiel and Emantha. I just haven't been able to figure out the last step to Teira's "quest" or what have you. Shame too, she's my favorite.

  6. One bug I ran into is that my character mentioned 'Now for the ambush' after getting the second artifact in the ice dungeon, when he shouldn't be aware of it... only caught it on the second round though since I though he meant his friend trying to get the artifact from him.

    1. Hmm. Though bugs like this are probable, I can't duplicate this one - you have unawakened Atreyan mentioning the ambush after getting the artifact? Anything unusual you did on your way?

      Delete
    2. Yeah, I distinctively remember it because it was kind of an odd thing to say, but at the time wrote it off. As for doing anything unusual, not really, I went clockwise on the switches starting with the north western one after looting all the chests that weren't behind ice. I suppose I interacted with the artifact chest a second time after flipping the first switch but other then that no.

As for NPCs - does jumping over them not work for you?

As for breaking the pattern, I'm not sure what you mean. Are you running through the game repeatedly without doing anything different?

    3. Never thought about that I can jump over the NPC, really good to know! Well then is the terrible hit chance just my bad luck. :/

  8. Could you please write a walkthrough? I have already got stuck quite a few times, because I forgot one important line of dialogue.

Also, how does the affection system work? There is no way to display current affection, and when I got a "you have to do better if you want something good to happen" message after one dialogue with Emantha, reloading and spending all my gold on gifts and giving them to her didn't change a thing.

This game seems pretty good, but I feel very lost when playing, because so little is explained.

Ah, and since there is absolutely no reason to fight mobs, constantly trying to get around them and battling them when caught is rather frustrating.

This game can be great, but so far it has been a quite frustrating experience.

    1. There's a quick walkthrough on ULMF:
      http://www.ulmf.org/bbs/showthread.php?p=835040

However, I think all you need is a basic hint: the NPC's tips and hints are there to keep you repeating the cycle. If you want to break it, you need to do the opposite of what they say. Doing this will answer your question about the affection system, and it also starts reducing the number of mobs.

    2. "Cycle"?

      Oh.
      Oooooh.
So that's how it is. I only played up to a point where you meet the fairy, so I had no idea. This game is about cycles, going through the game multiple times, breaking the rules, Stanley Parable style, is it?

That was very unexpected, I didn't get the impression that's how it would be when reading the preview. At all.

Hm, but I think in The Last Sovereign the twist was done better, safer. It was in the very first minutes of the game, you didn't have time to get confused. In this, however, I have already played for over an hour and started to think I'm doing something very wrong. That's where my frustration came from. If you wouldn't have responded to me, I would just dismiss the game as another bad porn rpg, delete it and forget about it.

      Hm.
To be honest, I'm terrible at games like these. I will try playing more anyway - I already started, may as well try to finish it.

I'll have one request, though. When releasing games like this, you really should write in the description some more hints saying what the game is truly about. Maybe put them in some kind of spoiler tags, so they are not visible by default and only people who do want to be spoiled will read them. The game's concept isn't bad at all, it's great. But now, knowing what the game is about, I feel... cheated. I downloaded a game, that is completely different from what it was described as. No hard feelings, but this is the first time I experienced such a thing.

      Delete
    3. Okay, feedback received. If you don't mind, can you provide me some more information so I can try to write future previews better?

      When you read this part:
"A kingdom is under attack. A princess is in peril. Our brave hero just needs to rescue her and save the day... right? OF COURSE! THERE IS NOTHING SUSPICIOUS GOING ON HERE, GO SAVE THE PRINCESS!"

What did you think? What kind of game did that make you expect? What pieces of the preview or my work gave you the impression that this would be a straightforward game?

      Delete
    4. Sure thing, let's do it.

After reading the quoted part I assumed the game to be mostly a normal, run-of-the-mill RPG Maker's RPG. The hero has to save the princess, but during his quest something happens related to the "suspicious" in the quote. He gets betrayed by closest allies/was a villain all along/everyone dies, something along those lines. Nothing suggested the cycles and replaying the game here.

Additionally, everything seems to be set up like a proper porn rpg - affection levels, a city with simple quests (seemingly leading to sex scenes), clear goal to be reached. Nothing out of ordinary.

Of course, now that I know what will be going on, the quote does make sense. But neither the preview, nor the first hour of the game have shown me anything saying that this game is not straightforward. I played for over an hour being sure that I'm playing the main game, the main part. Apparently, it was just a prologue, but nothing made me think that.

The preview is just so generic, that it really doesn't tell you anything about the game and its plot.

      Delete
    5. I see. That's a fair interpretation, and one I should have accounted for.

I have yet to think of a way to preview the actual game without making the twist no fun at all, however.

      Delete
    6. Coming back to add: I should have been clearer that I'm grateful to you for providing extensive feedback, and I'm sincere in trying to take it into account. I feel like with enough thought I should be able to come up with a better way to pitch the game, and you'll have been helpful in that. Thank you.

    7. It's great to see a developer who cares so much about his work. I have nothing more to add, except for this:

      Good luck.

    9. I knew you were up to something, like hell "nothing suspicious" going on. Game kind of reminds me of Bravely Default. It seems that once again you have made a game that has limited resources for the player :( you can't even level in this one.

Despite that a rather enjoyable game thanks for all your hard work.

      Delete
    10. Actually, i believed that the devoid of level mechanic is a game design choice intentionally made so that the players doesn't get discouraged replaying the cycles from initial level all the time, it also devoid the players from the chore of grinding every single new cycle.

That's what i thought at least.

  9. I'm detecting a certain theme in your characters, I think. Still a really cool little game.

Minor bug report, I think: Once you awaken Tiera, if you talk to her in her house at the start instead of opening the box, the box with 60g in it vanishes.

    Replies
    1. Another bug I noticed: with the full team of 4, trying to go to the fire temple without meeting the fairy had the protagonist respond like he was his old naive self.

Anyway, as great as the game is, I found it a little disappointing that your awakened party members don't interact much, besides that time in the ice temple and at the end. Giving them a line of dialogue with the others the first time they're awoken with other awakened party members would help that a lot, I think.

      Delete
    2. You're right about both bugs, but I believe they were easy to fix.

As for the interactions, this was the sort of thing I would have included more if I'd had more time, but I was on a tight schedule during my break month. I will definitely add more if I make a version 2.0.

  10. I haven't had the time to finish this yet, but I've played it some--I'm glad I started before the revised version, honestly. I understand why you felt the need to post that, but I will say that I felt it was more than obvious just from the original preview that the game was going to be anything but the standard type of game it parodied within the cycle. And if I had any doubts, the name taken together with the first few hints made it pretty apparent that there was some sort of cycle going on. I'm sorry to see that it wasn't as obvious to others, but I have a hard time seeing how anyone who has played (and enjoyed) TLS could not have predicted that there was going to be a twist that, well, twisted the genre and played with the apparent tropes. Either way, I've enjoyed the game thusfar and I look forward to having the time to finish it.

    1. I'm glad you're enjoying it!

I decided it was necessary for several reasons. There are a lot of people out there who haven't played TLS, for one, or who don't know/care who I am. Also, there are a lot of bad hRPGs out there, so someone wouldn't be wrong to have a policy of assuming the worst.

    2. I understand that, of course. I didn't mean what I said as a complaint about your decision--I just wanted to offer my own reaction to the original as a counterpoint to those who expressed the opposite opinion. Thanks for the game, regardless!

    3. I appreciated it as a counterpoint! Though as a creator I have to navigate a middle path that will make my games work for many people, to do that it's important that I take into account all opinions. And, of course, it's always nice to know that something you've worked hard to make hit someone just the way you intended it. ^-^

  16. This game is just great. I guess I'm the target audience as a fan of "cycles" in games and other media, but this one was pulled off damn near perfectly. Foreshadowing was done nicely with the visions. It clued me in right away that something was off.

Thanks for making this, I really enjoyed it.

    A small amount of feedback:

    - I feel like there should have been an additional event (inner voice) that occurs in the forest after the first cycle, as we walk by the bridge/path fork that would draw the player to venture deeper in that area. Maybe more resistance by Slimey to exploring up there too. As it is, it's reliant on the player deciding to explore up there without any guidance.

    - Items on tables don't have any visual distinction differentiating them from non-usable items. I'm guessing it could cause people to overlook the bomb bag and fire necklace in the item shop.

    - A way to view a characters affection earlier on. Before the twist, it can cause some confusion as to how you can view it. Especially as it is shown by Slimey in that one scene.

    - Fight animations should have an option to be turned off, as run of the mill enemies become a chore to battle as the game progresses.

  18. I enjoyed the game and its concept very much and aside from being able to jump over some of the teleport triggers, I found no bugs at all.

I found one inconsistency imo with the armors, when you talk to the armors in the shop:

    - Wind protects from Earth
    - Holy protects from Dark
    - Fire Protects from Fire (!)
    - Ice protects from Ice (!)

Shouldn't Fire protect from Ice and vice versa, especially since the swords also work that way?

Also I think the holy weapon is kind of unneeded, the sharp swords works really well vs all the enemies in the castle (where I assume you'd benefit the most from a holy weapon). The other weapon types yield way more benefit in their respective dungeons.

    Cheers!

    1. The ice/fire armor is a legacy of an earlier plan I had for the elements, you're probably right that I should switch it for consistency. As for the holy weapon... that's a little more complicated, there are different equations involved.

  21. Hoo pretty awesome game, just finished the true ending and was a bit disappointed that there was no showdown with one of the overseer mages to break the spell, the slime was a bit underwhelming tbh, but the plot itself was great. The first cycle fooled me for a bit because I thought I had to get the girls affections high enough to awaken them before I got to the first shrine, after that it was a cinch hahaha. The reason he didn't get along with the princess is because she was artificial right?
Btw, what was going on during the prologue? Were the overseers trying to destroy/reset the world or something by brute force to prevent them from escaping? It seemed they all were fully awakened and running away from something.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. That's right, the princess within the spell isn't a real person.

The prologue is a glimpse of a previous cycle in which the characters created one of the shrines you use later. They're not truly awakened, but they are aware that they're trapped in a spell. When they tried to escape, however, the sorcerers noticed their meddling and came to force reset the world. Hence the need to give up on escaping and hide what they'd learned in one of the shrines for later use.

Anyway, glad you enjoyed it! ^-^

    2. Ah okay, thanks for the answer. Just another small curiosity of mine, I believe that the cycles usually aren't supposed to end right after the "main villain" is defeat right? After all sometimes the characters say that they lived an entire life together and mastered certain skills, and that wouldn't be quite possible in the small time frame we play (not to mention the main marrying the princess).

Not to be presumptuous, but if I could make a suggestion if you ever intend to expand the game, maybe changing the last boss if you defeat all the big monsters and providing an extended ending would be possible? Something like one of the sorcerers come to investigate why the mana is fluctuating so much (because you took down all the big monsters) and you end up having to fight him to make a break for it. Kudos again for such a great game, you're an amazing writer!

      Delete
    3. When the cycle resets depends on how it ends. This was a detail of my plans that never really got into the game - basically, the cycles go as short as you see in the game under normal circumstances, but in unusual cases the cycle drags on and people live full lifetimes.

Suggestions are welcome, though no guarantees. ^-^ There will be an expanded version of the game in time, but not before I get in some solid updates on my main projects.

  24. I still can't believe you were just sitting on this whole little world with a fleshed out story and character that you can believe exist. And you just happened to bring this world to life in under a few weeks (for fun no less), amazing execution Sierra. I hope you know that in a super niche game genre you go above and beyond, you are the highest of caliber in my book. As for "fixing the prologue" to make sense to a wider audience don't let that discourage you at all it comes with the territory. Some don't appreciate slow builds and if you can't hook them with a flashy something in the first 30 they'll look for other instant gratification.
Again I'm 100% looking forward to your future projects and and it goes without saying anything to do with the TLS universe.

  26. [Spoiler: Ouroboros [if you don't know how to game ends/goes)

Sierra, I played the entire game in 5 cycles in about four and a half hours. The game is great. When I first got the the Vizier boss, I just went with the "no" option, and he was pretty difficult. I beat him and then the scene and music changed, and I got super scared (lol) because it was late night and the dialogue got intense.

I was able to figure out the memories in the 2nd cycle because I remembered Slimey said to not go the northern path from the Dungeon of Stone; that place was pretty spooky, too. I awakened Teira Cycle 2 and explored more; I then went onto Cycle 3 which I awakened Emantha and explored (Fire Barrier near Dungeon of Fire). Onto Cycle 4, I awakened Amiel and did the Fairy scene while exploring more options (Rock at Dungeon of Ice). With the item from Emantha, I could melt the ice, and I could remove grates with Amiel's influence with the fairy. I got the Viliana ambush, got the 2nd awakening stone with the bomb (Dungeon of Ice). Barely got 1k gold and bought the Fire Necklace. (50g, I think, if you get the Ice artifact and the item from Emantha (item fusion by Emantha), beat up a succubus, and got into another creepy area; tentacle-like. (o.o)/ I had a lot of the strongest weapons (Light-Element) and boss-drop items. Beat the final boss, Slimey. BIG ORGY (LOL).

I was sad we didn't anything with Princess Cescilla, <3, but Atreyan was sick of Princesses, sadly. I also was excited when you first met the Fairy because I knew it was gonna be good. All the scenes was detailed and enjoyable.

Overall, Great game and interesting plot/dialouges, thanks Sierra!

    1. Glad the game worked for you so well! While Princess Cescilla will never be the focus for thematic reasons, I'll include at least one scene with her in the enhanced version. ^-^

  27. The only problem i got with this is the fact that if Ouroboros ever get a sequel i fear it wouldn't be about "cycles" anymore, plot-wise at least...

Would you like to surprise me, Sierra? ;)

Oh don't worry no pressure, i just actually really interested with the continuation of the story and kinda sad that there could be no chance of sequel. :(

    1. I'm glad you're interested in the story, of course! As for a sequel... if such a thing ever came to be, I assure you it would be thematically consistent.

  28. That was fun, though I have to say, as soon as I got into the forbidden northern area on the second cycle, I immediately knew who the final boss was going to be, just because it was too absurd to not go that way. And I was right.

  29. Also, on the point where Amiel isn't present in her house, it's possible to activate various things in her house and have her respond, even though she's not there.

  30. Hey, just played through the game after reading the very positive review beliar posted above. I really liked it! If you decide to make any further updates, I noticed a few minor bugs you may want to address:

When going through town with awakened Atreyan prior to viewing the barriers at the castle, Atreyan still uses his pre-awakened dialog if you try to enter the inn.

After opening the chest near the succubus, leaving and re-entering the screen causes it to close again.

In the sex scene with the fairy, the sentence starting with "Though the Fairy's body was small" has an extra space in it.

  31. I just finished. It was quite enjoyable—especially the story/characters, but I could also see a lot of stuff in the mechanics that was nicely designed to minimize frustration in this sort of game (the in-place regeneration, the lack of leveling and retention of most items, etc).

The prologue was interesting. It definitely suggested themes of reincarnation and multiple lives. To me, it didn’t give away the main twist, which is great. (The part about killing all the villagers did make me think that the game might get somewhat darker than it actually is.)

However, there were hints from the very beginning of the game proper, like the extremely blatant railroading and lampshaded game logic.

I didn’t really have any trouble finding the point of divergence on my second cycle, since I had already tried to go there earlier and run into a plot wall. But it did seem a little bit farther into the game than I expected, so I felt a little anxious while I was playing through the previous parts that I would somehow miss it and have to go through the regular cycle again. (In particular, I was worried that using the bomb in the forest again was too much “what I was supposed to do,” since I had already seen the bombable place on the beach).

Someone above mentioned the final boss felt a bit anticlimactic. I thought this boss was fine conceptually, but for me it was a little too easy. The sprite was also not particularly intimidating. For these reasons, I was sort of expecting a “second stage” of the battle or another boss battle afterwards.

(Sorry for the wall of text; I just felt like writing a bit. No need to reply in kind :)

  32. Slight "bug" in the Dungeon of Fire: If you go right from the entrance, monsters following can block you from moving if you jump to the chest. Since there's only 1 spot to jump back to, a following monster will force you to reload since it'll keep blocking it.

  33. So, I put the fire necklace thing that lets me dispell Flame barriers on Emantha... I never again had to buy the necklace. It stayed there all eternity. Also, the items I get from the optional bosses, I guess they are, don't disappear from cycle to cycle. You expect me to believe that in the millions of cycles, that's the first time I got those, or something? Bah.

Anyways, nice game, as a silent fan of TLS, I was expecting some kind of twist. Not that specifically, but some twist. It gave me 5 hours of fun, and I thank you for them. *returns to life as a silent but devoted fan*

  35. I'm having trouble getting Teira's scene. I've beaten the Stone Dungeon with her in the party, and when I click "Relationship" she has new dialogue, but no scene starts.

  37. Oops. I've found a problem with the Stone Dungeon. There are two chests in the South East corner that you can reach by jumping over a stalagtite. If you do that, without killing the nearby monster, you will get trapped because you can't jump back with the monster following you. :(

    1. And another one in the stone dungeon. When Tiera runs into the room, panicking. If a random monster picks that moment to block your path the game will freeze.

    2. Hey, I appreciate all bug reports, but you should probably save yourself the trouble of typing these up. Both these bugs and several others are actually fixed in a version 1.1.7 - I wanted to have it finished now, but ended up putting TLS and version 2.0 as a higher priority (the bugs are all fixed in version 2.0 too).

  40. Wait, hold on.
The version of the game being sold on Nutaku for $15, is that the same as this version being freely given to anyone who know about your website?
Or is this version out of date compared to the one on Nutaku?

    1. Version 1.1.7 will provide a complete experience, but the one being sold on Nutaku (or any other store) is version 2.0 with substantially more content. Art for all the sex scenes as well as a larger number of scenes, dungeons, conversations, etc. I'd say it's about twice as big as the original version.

    1. No, grinding would be pointless given the main premise of the game.

  44. The Android version doesn't work!
I can't open the menu or save the game!
Am I doing something wrong or is it just broken and needs fixing?

    Somebody! Anybody! Please tell me!

    1. Gold should have its own box that appears in the lower left every time you open the circular menu.

    1. Wow, when I cleared out some old files from my Mega account last year, I never imagined that people were still downloading a seven year old beta. Sorry about that.

This version of the game can still be played for free on Newgrounds: https://www.newgrounds.com/portal/view/692386

I'd generally prefer that people play version 2.0, but I understand not everyone wants to buy it.
