Ouroboros Preview

I'm happy to announce the side game I created while I was on my break! Patrons got a full report of some of the other work I did, and you'll be getting a schedule of releases in a few days, but for now I wanted to spotlight one of the things I've finished as proof that I haven't just been goofing off. =P

Ouroboros

Ouroboros presents a bright, cheerful world in which something is horrifyingly wrong. The hero has a princess to save and a quest set before him, but there are unsettling signs that all this has happened before. As you play the game, you'll come to realize that the dungeons and monsters are meaningless distractions from the task of uncovering the truth.

Ouroboros is an action-adventure with RPG elements. As you can see in the above screenshot, you have the ability to jump, for example. You may also note that this one was made in MV; while I will keep my current projects in VX Ace, I did want to play around with the new version. Though it doesn't have a rich set of resources yet, it does have some fun possibilities:

I've included a variety of features in an effort to make the game feel different from the usual RPG. As much as I love the genre, I get a lot of it between The Last Sovereign and Noxian Nights. This side project was an effort to make a different flavor, and hopefully you guys will find it refreshing as well.

The combat system is grind-free: there aren't any levels at all, your strength comes primarily from your equipment and tactical choices. Though you can't see it in that screenshot, you have the ability to change your equipment at any time in combat. You can see MV's new side battle mode, which is a nice change of scenery.

Of course, the game has plenty of adult content as well. ^-^ Throughout the game you'll find six different sex scenes, and I may expand that number later.

I'll give a full schedule at the official end of the break month, but this game will be released the usual way: patrons will get to play it first, then I'll release it publicly. But while I'm doing that, I'll be diving back into TLS - while I was glad to take a break, I really found myself missing it. See you soon with more updates!

  1. Amazing news! :) The side-game looks incredible! Can't wait to give it a try.
I'm glad to see you miss TLS! Props to you for creating such a great game. The writing and raw knowledge that went into it (megail trading and the like) is incredible, and I'm now completely hooked to the story & can't wait to see how the next act plays out!

Thanks again for your hard work :)

  2. Looking forward to playing this in the public release!

If you were to remaster TLS one day, would you likely use a more recent RPG Maker engine or something else entirely?

    1. Thanks, I'm looking forward to getting it out!

As for a TLS remaster... well, my first goal will always be to finish the game, so I don't want to go chasing paths that could lead to progress stalling. Having said that, of course I've had thoughts about what a remake would entail. My general philosophy is that if I'm going to spend that much time re-creating a game, it should offer the player a large amount of new content. Moving from VX Ace to MV would take a ton of time relative to what it would bring to the table, so that's unlikely. A custom engine would be great, but that's well beyond my budget... maybe someday. =D

  3. Hmmm, hero's named Atrey(an). Hairstyle is about right but a new color. Any chance we'll see a luck dragon? Because a Neverending Story RPG would rock.

  4. Hope you didnt exhaust yourself while making this game too.Lol. Did something like a story influence u to make this game? Btw did you get what you wanted through yr holiday? like new ideas and all?

    1. My inspiration in this case comes more from some specific video games - you'll see the influence once you play it.

And yes, I found my holiday quite refreshing. ^-^

  5. The side on combat style is reminiscent of games like the original Final Fantasy so it will be good to see again. I like your work and from the look and description of the game this will be no different, looking forward to playing it when it comes out. Not sure I believe you though when you say nothing suspicious is happening :)

    1. I'm shocked, shocked that you could find anything suspicious. XD Anyway, hope you enjoy it when it comes out!

  6. This isn't me being a jerk or trying to speed you up; more of a "When should I mark my calendar so I'm not constantly checking for updates": When will the next update of The Last Sovereign come out? Is it usually 30 somethin' days after the previous post on this blogspot?

    1. I wish I could give you an exact date, but I don't want to make promises at this stage. However, I began work on this update on May 4 and it is my current top priority, so I would hope it would come out no later than the beginning of June. I'm definitely hoping for the end of May, though.

    2. Sorry, because this is a whole new game, I wasn't able to get it debugged and ready for public release in just a week. Well, it would have been possible, but that would have meant taking time away from TLS, and that's not what people want.

Glad you're excited, and sorry to deliver bad news. I really hope it will be polished and ready for release in a week!

  8. Finished the game. The driving concept... is much darker than I thought it would be. But given Last Sovereign, subverting story expectations seems to be your thing.

Well done. Too bad I don't see what happens AFTER the end, though.

  12. What game engine is this for, RPG maker VX - ACE or MV? BTW, The Last Sovereign is a great game! It is one of my favorite RPG Maker games! Thank you all and please respond.

    1. This was made in MV - not sure if you're using this post for some other reason, but just in case: the game is actually finished, feel free to download it via the link on the right. Expect updates regarding both a bugfix and an expanded version before too long.

      Anyway, glad you enjoyed TLS!

  13. Seriously, I have always been a lurker but I came out to appreciate. Wow! Sierra Lee consider you have a fan. An amazing thought process you got there. I am sure your mind will do much more. Played noxian nights aswell, i know its from hreinn but it deserves credit also..albeit a notch low ;). The plus there was the scenes in noxian. Here its the deep deep story... Wow what a main character. Kudos!

    1. Didn't expect a comment on this post, but thanks! I'm guessing you know, but for anyone who might not, here's a link to the newest version of the game:

If you liked the story and characters in Ouroboros, you'll probably like a lot of my work. I'm trying to work at a steady pace and not get spread out, but you'll probably have more games along these lines to enjoy before too long. ^-^

  14. Trying to play the game with an xbox controller but there seems to be no button assigned to jump. Any chance for a controller config?

    1. Ah, sorry no one seems to have responded here! Unfortunately, controllers are not supported in MV, and the program is new enough no good plugin for it has yet been written.

  15. I really enjoyed the "numb" MC of this game sorta reminds me of myself, I would love to see this archetype delved further into as it's not done very often and fewer still done well, which you managed to pull off however to very good effects. I would love to see maybe a sequel as a later project if possible.

    1. I'm glad to hear that! I love this archetype and many related ones, like stoicism, so you will definitely see more protagonists along these lines from me.
